5 Reasons Self-Published Authors Struggle to Sell Books (And How to Fix Them)

You published your book. You shared it on social media, told your family and friends, and waited. But the sales never came, or they slowed to a trickle after the first week. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. This is one of the most common experiences for self-published authors, and most of the reasons are completely fixable.

Reason 1: No Launch Strategy

Most authors think publishing is the launch. It is not. The launch happens before the book comes out. Building anticipation, growing an email list, getting advance readers, and creating pre-orders are the activities that drive sales on day one.

Reason 2: A Cover That Does Not Match the Genre

Readers judge books by their covers, especially on Amazon where the thumbnail is small. If your cover does not immediately communicate the genre and quality of your book, readers will scroll past it. This is one of the most common and most fixable problems.

Reason 3: No Author Platform

Where do readers go to learn more about you after they discover your book? If the answer is nowhere, that is a problem. An author platform, including your website, email list, and social presence, is what turns a one-time reader into a lifelong fan.

Reason 4: A Weak Book Description

Your book description is your sales copy. It needs to hook the reader, communicate the transformation or experience they will get, and end with a reason to buy now. A flat, vague description kills conversions even when the book itself is excellent.

Reason 5: No Reviews

Amazon and other platforms use reviews as a primary trust signal. A book with zero or very few reviews is invisible in the algorithm. Building a review strategy before you launch, through advance reader copies and reader outreach, is non-negotiable.

At Simone House, our Strategy and Marketing service addresses every one of these issues with a customized plan built specifically for your book. Book a free discovery call to get started.
